Hydro-Blasting

The Right Way To Prepare Pools For New Surfaces

Hydro-blasting is one of the best construction technologies to become available to the pool industry in several decades. Many pool owners don’t consider the damage that can happen with traditional over-lament re-plastering methods, and what it causes to the pool surface. Did you know there is no bond warranty with the over-lament method? Manufacturers and pool contractors can not warranty your old pool surface that’s been in your pool for years from d-bonding. It’s not if it will d-bond but when it will it will and when it does it will take your new surface with it, so we want to educate pool owners that when performing swimming pool re-plastering on a swimming pool or spa, the surface prep is key to get the new plaster to properly bond to the shell.

Pool Hydro-Blasting Versus Over-Lament

When it comes to swimming pool re-plastering, the prep work is everything, most companies in this area do what is called the over-lament method, this method involves going over the old surface and adding a coating called a bond-coat. This coating makes a rough texture for the new surface to grab on to, but what you don’t know is your bond is only as good as that original pool surface material you have had in your pool for many years since it was built, and it’s only a matter of time before it fails taking along your new pool surface with it causing you damage to your pool surface and a big out of pocket expense and as most pool owners find out this is an issue called d-lamination or d-bonding is not covered under pool contractors workmanship warranty or the manufactures product warranty and that’s something we don’t ever want our customers to have to deal with. Hydro Blasting is our preferred method of preparing a pool to receive a new surface. When a pool is hydro-blasted this means we utilize a 40,000.00 PSI 300 horsepower diesel run water jetting machine, this is not your father power washer and is designed for removing old and loose materials and creating a mechanical finish to your pool surface this mechanical profile allows for the perfect bond to your new surface allowing us to offer homeowners a 10-year bond warranty this benefits both the homeowner and the contractor.

Hydro-blasting Method

  • Completely removes all old and loose plaster materials from the pool structure prior to plastering.

  • Leaves an excellent mechanical profile for new surface material for bonding.

  • Comes with a 10-year bond warranty against surface d-bonding from the shell.

  • Does not impact or weaken the pool shell substrate.

  • Does not add additional weight to the pool shell structural substrate.

  • Allows visual inspection of pool shell upon completion that could detect underlying issues prior to new surface installation.

Over-lament Method

  • Chips and removes only pockets that are detected at the time of the project prep phase.

  • Old plaster materials are left in the pool shell and not removed.

  • Pools are acid washed and bond-coated this coat goes over old material.

  • An average minimum of 3,600 LBS is added to the pool structure integrity.

  • Companies who do this process do not have any bond warranties on your old surface materials.

Most Homeowners Don’t Realize Until It’s Too Late

Most of the time the homeowner is not to blame as they were never giving the correct information in the first place, as most companies don’t talk about it or they don’t know the risks. The typical price to prep and resurface your swimming pool correctly starts around $10,000.00 to $15,000.00 for a residential pool, where most contractors who don’t prep your pool correctly and use the over lament method average between $4,800.00 to $6,800.00 because they fail to perform the most important part of the job the removal of all the old and loose materials from the pool using a 40,000.00 PSI 300 hp water blasting rig, but most learn the saving from choosing the over lament method is more of a curse and leaves the homeowner with a pool that was not prepared correctly prior to resurfacing that in most cases fails within a few years. This leaves the homeowner with a faulty pool finish and more out-of-pocket expenses to correct it and the manufacturer and contractor have no liabilities as they don’t warranty your original old surface materials.
